Proper surface preparation is essential for a successful wallpaper installation. The required steps vary depending on your wall's existing condition.

Surface Assessment & Preparation

Newly Plastered Walls: Clean the surface, apply 2-3 coats of putty to achieve a smooth finish, and complete any other renovations before wallpapering.
Previously Painted Walls: Assess the paint's condition. If it is firmly adhered and not flaking, you can apply a specialized wallpaper primer/sealer directly onto the paint. If the paint is chalky, peeling, or unstable, it must be completely removed before proceeding.
Existing Wallpapered Walls: It is generally recommended to remove all old wallpaper. This allows you to inspect and prepare the underlying wall surface. As an exception, if the existing wallpaper is a solid, non-vinyl type and shows no signs of loosening (test by applying a damp towel for 10 minutes), new wallpaper may be applied over it.

Installation Sequence

1. Wall Preparation: Remove any loose material. Repair cracks or holes with filler and joint tape. Reinforce problematic walls with lining paper or gypsum board if needed.

2. Priming & Sealing: Apply a suitable primer to the prepared wall. Once dry, apply a dedicated wallpaper primer/sealer. This crucial step ensures better adhesion and facilitates future removal.

3. Hanging Wallpaper: Measure and cut strips, planning for pattern matching. Apply adhesive evenly, allow recommended "booking" time for the paper, then carefully hang each strip. Smooth from the center outward, seam carefully, and remove any excess adhesive immediately.
